It was an elegant and classy affair at the Harper Fowlkes House in Downtown Savannah, Georgia! This wedding was everything. Stephanie and Preston were a dream couple to capture. Both exuded such sophistication and grace that it made for the loveliest ceremony. From the Ceremony to the reception all the way down to the Old Fashions (their beverage of choice). If class were personified it would resemble these two.
As for their venue, what can I possibly say about the Harper Fowlkes House that could possibly do it the justice it deserves? The venue is just incredible, and almost as incredible as the person in of whom it gets its name. I absolutely LOVE history, so I’m going to speak a little about this.
So, let’s play a little game of “Did you know?”
Did you know that the venue Harper Fowlkes House gets it’s name from a local woman to Savannah, named Alida Harper Fowlkes who restored it into the beautiful venue it is today?
It was originally built in 1844 in a Greek Revivalist style by architect Charles B. Chuskey for a local shipping magnate who would wind up having to sell the home. From there, it changed hands for nearly a century until Alida Harper Fowlkes bought it for $9000 (What!?) in 1939 where she renovated it, turning it into the building we see there today!
A little more on Alida; The Olde Pink House, (The famous restaurant on Reynolds) was actually formerly owned by her when it was still called the Georgian Tea Room. She also owned and restored another of Charles Chuskey’s Greek Revival building, which is now the home of a locally loved and adored bookstore by the name of E. Shavers. Alida also restored over ten other buildings throughout Savannah, but it’s safe to say her most famous one is her first.
